Path to Sustainability (and surviving the zombies)
Smart Pots for winter garden

I decided I could manage to fill all the pots without a big trucking shipment, and in doing this, I could experiment with a few different mixes.

Al’s 5-1-1 Mix  - 4 cu ft pine bark fine mulch, 10 gallons sphagnum peat moss, 10 gallons perlite, 4 cups dolomitic lime,

1x 20 gallon & 1x 10 gallon on the ground

1x 20 gallon & 1x 10 gallon on cement pad

Earthgro Planter Mix, 2 cu ft (similar ingredients to above but commercial bagged mix)

1x 20 gallon on ground

Kellogs Garden Soil 3 cu ft (red bag, flowers & veggies) + Harvest Supreme soil amendment (2 cu ft)

1x 20 gallon on the ground

1x 20 gallon on cement pad

Kellogs Garden Soil 3 cu ft (blue bag, trees & shrubs) + Harvest Supreme soil amendment (2 cu ft)

1x 20 gallon & 1x 10 gallon on the ground

Bark based mixes need to absorb a lot of water and I also need to test how fast or slow these drain, so I soaked them all with water and will test them with a dowel rod over the next few days.

I am still figuring out what mix to use with the 200 gallon pot for the root veg,

I also transplanted a couple tropical fruit trees into some remaining mix of Kellogs Red, peat moss and perlite.  A few more trees tomorrow when I get more mix.
Mango Plant (1 ft tall about 6 months old), Cocktail Grapefruit (2 ft tall), Pomegranate (Sweet red - 3 ft tall), Mexican Papaya (8 in tall), Asian Guava (2ft to 3 ft), Pineapple Plant (1 feet tall)

Cocktail Grapefruit?Pom and Asian Guava

Winter garden

Since I won’t be doing much landscaping in the back until I have better plans and more savings, I am going to be planting a winter garden in Smart Pots.  I have used these for my fruit trees in front, and this brand is great since they are fairly high walled.

one 200 gallon pot (50” base, 20” tall)

 - red & green leaf lettuce, buttercrunch bibb lettuce, mesclun mix, arugula, spinach.

one 30 gallon pot (24” base, 16.5” tall):

 - mix of root veg (carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips) to see what works in this depth of container

four 20 gallon pots (20” base, 14.5” tall):

 - 2x broccoli

 - 2x kale

five 10 gallon pots (16” base, 12.5” tall):

 - swiss chard

 - mustard greens

 - snow peas (w/trellis)

 - snap peas (w/trellis)

 - yellow peas (w/trellis)

Onions, garlic, radishes and herbs (thyme, sage, cilantro, parsley, chives) will be spread throughout as space permits.

Working my my old friends at @ Farmscape Gardens to get 2 cu yards of their favorite soil blend to fill all of these containers.  I also need to build a bunch of drip irrigation grids to fit these round containers.

Planning for Canning

Next spring, I need to be ready with a plan for preserving more fruit & vegetables from the garden, so here is a list of ideas at this early stage.  The current thinking is to build an outdoor kitchen, why not in LA’s great weather?

I already have a deep plastic utility sink, a stainless steel table, and a 110v induction plate.  Cold water is easy, will need to consider if I need hot running water, or if everything needed can come from boiling pots.

Other needs (I will probably be hunting Craigslist & garage sales before buying new):

Lots and lots of glass jars, and a shelving/storage rack.

Water Storage doesn’t have to be ugly.  Working on a design to hide a 275 gallon IBC tote as part of a waterfall, which will also feed the drip irrigation system and be topped off from city water.

I am going to start documenting my preparedness plans and progress.  A lot of p’s there, sorry.  As I go, I’ll try to write some thoughts about reasons for doing various elements, without getting into all the big “omg the world as we know it is ending!” sort of claptrap that is all too common on “survivalist” forums & blogs.  My focus is more on self-sustainability and educating myself on old skills that have been a bit lost in our modern era.

Goals for the remaining days of October:

  • plant the winter veggie garden in existing Smart Pot containers.
  • buy & plant tropical fruit trees from Papaya Tree Nursery.  http://papayatreenursery.com/fruit-trees-for-the-san-fernando-valley/
  • make a batch of Al’s Gritty Mix (soilless potting mix) - http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/contain/msg031028425011.html and transplant Japanese Maple
  • make container/bed for privacy screen bamboo, two x 3’d x 2’w x 6’l.  Research if 60mil poly barrier needed on bottom.  Consider metal horse trough instead of wooden raised bed?  http://bamboogeek.blogspot.com/2008/02/growing-bamboo-in-containers.html
  • Source & plant bamboo.  Black & Blue?  http://bamboogeek.blogspot.com/2011/08/my-all-time-favorite-bamboo-teagues.html  -  http://bamboogeek.blogspot.com/2011/06/black-bamboo-what-beauty.html
  • start collecting bamboo poles (craigslist?) for greenhouse build

just a test, new here
